CEBU CITY — American wingman Sameen Swint and rookie guard Neon Chavez hit some crucial shots down the stretch as University of Southern Philippines Foundation beat University of Cebu, 78-72, in the 2019 Cesafi basketball tournament on Tuesday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Chavez gave the Panthers a spark at the start of the fourth, draining three consecutive three-point shots in a 16-5 run that put USPF in front, 65-59, with a little over seven minutes remaining.
Then, with UC threatening at 72-74 after two straight layups by ace guard Darrell Shane Menina, Swint came up with a huge triple from the corner to give USPF some breathing space at 77-72, time down to 1:02.
The Panthers then shut the door on the Webmasters, forcing Paul Galinato and Luigi Gabisan into missed threes and denying Menina of a fastbreak bucket to seal the victory and even their record up at 1-1.
Swint ended up with 30 points and six rebounds, while Chavez had 19 points, three assists and three steals.
Sierra Leone’s Tosh Sesay had 19 points and 20 rebounds for UC.
Menina contributed 15 points, eight assists and two steals for the Webmasters, who slipped to 0-2.
