USJ-R Jaguars pounce on lackluster Cobras to emerge No. 3 seed in Cesafi Final Four

    Sep 14, 2014

CEBU CITY – University of San Jose-Recoletos (USJ-R) clinched the No. 3 seed in the Final Four of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) after beating an unusually subdued Southwestern University side, 84-73, at the close of the elimination round at the Cebu Coliseum.

In a contest that carried crucial match-up implications in the semis, the Jaguars were only too happy to pounce on the lackluster effort of the Cobras, uncorking a 16-3 blast to take a 46-31 lead at the half.

The Cobras tried to make a fight out of it, coming as close as six points. But the Jaguars turned them back behind the crucial three-pointers of Mark Labares and James Regalado, who made three in a row late in the game that gave USJ-R a comfortable 78-63 lead with 3:47 to go.

Labares finished the game with 22 points, seven rebounds, and three steals, while Congo native Quintin Nzuzi added 15 markers.

The victory allowed USJ-R to finish the double round elimination round with an even 5-5 (win-loss) record, good for the No. 3 spot, while dropping SWU to No. 2 with an 8-2 slate.

The two teams face off in the semifinals on Thursday.

John Lloyd Luz led the Cobras with 15 points, while Landry Sanjo finished with 12 markers after seeing action in limited minutes.

The loss by the Cobras meant University of San Carlos (USC) will end up as the top-seeded team with a league-best 9-1 card.

The Warriors, though, drew the unenviable task of meeting dangerous defending champion University of the Visayas (UV) in the other semifinal pairing starting on Tuesday.
