CEBU CITY — Defending champion University of the Visayas ripped undermanned University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 91-50, on Saturday in the 17th Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Green Lancers scored their eighth win in nine matches, tightening their grip on first place.
USPF played without five big men — Kenneth Cada, Roy Quiachon, Ranje Mangyao, Jhmer Ranceli and Edwin Villarta — after Thursday’s tussle during the match against the University of Cebu.
With guards being forced to man USPF’s frontcourt, UV pounded the ball down low for easy baskets. Things even got downright comical late in the game as UV head coach Gary Cortes fielded in a quintet that featured four big men and small forward Jerome Napao manning the point.
Tristan Albina led the Green Lancers with 19 points and four steals while Ted Saga added 14 on a perfect 7-of-7 clip. Little-used big man Ubert Villaceran took advantage of his added playing time and delivered a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
USPF dropped out of contention for the semifinals with their seventh loss in 10 games.
