CEBU CITY —University of Cebu (UC) kicked off its second-round campaign on a winning note, besting University of San Jose- Recoletos (USJ-R), 80-74, in the 2019 Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (CESAFI) men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Tosh Sesay, UC’s prolific big man from Sierra Leone, tallied a massive double-double of 29 points and 29 rebounds to go with two blocks while court general Darrell Shane Menina had 17 points, five boards and six assists. Veteran guard John Jabello also scored in double-figures with 11 markers.
UC trailed by as much as 13, 16-29, but turned things around in the third period where they outscored USJ-R, 26-14, to take a 60-52 lead to the fourth period.
While Sesay and Menina played steady basketball to keep UC in the game, it was the gritty play of reserves Kyle Ordeniza and Renzo Galdo that gave the Webmasters the burst it needed to surge ahead 76-58.
However, USJ-R refused to quit and uncorked 14 straight points to pull within four, 72-76, with 1:02 to go. But that was as close as USJ-R got as UC answered right away with a triple by Menina that sealed the win — the Webmasters’ fourth in seven games.
USJ-R got 26 points from Miguel Gastador and 19 from diminutive guard Renz Solomon but it was not enough to keep the Jaguars from losing their sixth game in eight tries.
