CEBU CITY — University of the Visayas asserted its mastery of University of San Jose-Recoletos, 76-56, in the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Green Lancers shot the lights out in the first half in a rematch against last season’s runner-up Jaguars, sinking nine three-pointers to lead by 20 points, 42-22.
The Jaguars came roaring back and pulled to within five, 41-46, on a transition bucket by Carl Cabulao in the third period.
But UV got its rhythm back and countered with a 12-4 run to bring their lead back to double-figures, 58 -45, heading to the final period.
UV raised the lead to a high of 22 points, 69-47, and cruised to the victory to improve its win-loss record to 3-1.
Ted Saga led the Green Lancers with 14 points off of four triples and made six rebounds.
Monic Soliva continued to be a steady presence inside as he scored 12 points while Gileant Delator scattered eight points, nine rebounds, four assists and five steals in extended minutes due to the absence of guard Gabriel Cometa and the limited play of Sheldon Gahi who is nursing an injured shoulder.
Renz Solomon scored 12 points for USJ-R, which lost its third game in a row to drop to 1- 3.
