CEBU CITY – The Southwestern University Cobras routed the Cebu Institute of Technology-University Wildcats, 82-68, to seize the early lead in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament on Thursday at the Cebu Coliseum.
After getting the green light to play from the Cesafi board on Wednesday, Bendly Valdor led the way with 15 points and eight rebounds as the Cobras sent the Wildcats crashing back to earth after a 67-60 conquest of defending champion University of Visayas on opening weekend.
Valdor formed a lethal combination with SWU’s other reinforcement, Landry Sanjo, who had 13 points and eight boards. Reigning league MVP Mark Jayven Tallo added 12 points, five rebounds and three assists as the Cobras won their second straight game of the season.
The Cobras used their size advantage early to free up power forward Daryl Goloran for easy baskets. That also opened up the perimeter for shooting guard Anton Pardo to swish several three-pointers as SWU zoomed off to a 24-10 lead after the opening frame.
The Wildcats remained within striking distance at halftime, 32-44, but the Cobras scored the next five points to begin their breakaway, 49-32.
CIT came within 11, 60-71, with less than six minutes left in the game after a three-point play from Steven Bucao and a high-looping fadeaway jumper from Allan Dimco but SWU doused the fire with consecutive lay-ups from Tallo and Valdor.
Tempers flared late in the game after Bucao gave a hard foul on Valdor which led to a heated argument between SWU head coach Raul 'Yayoy' Alcoseba and CIT-U athletic director Alex dela Torre. However, cooler heads prevailed and both men shook hands after the final buzzer.
Dimco and fellow forward Joshua dela Cerna led the Wildcats with 16 points each.
In the juniors division, JB Bahio notched a double-double with 18 points and 15 rebounds to lead the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers past the Cebu Eastern College Dragons, 92-65
