Landry Sanjo leads way as SWU Cobras overcome USC Warriors to clinch Cesafi basketball title

    Oct 20, 2014

CEBU CITY —  Southwestern University bagged the Cesafi men’s basketball title after thumping University of San Carlos, 64-49, in the deciding Game Five on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Cameroonian import Landry Sanjo scored 20 points, and pulled down 13 rebounds, while helping the Cobras hold Warriors reinforcement Shooster Olago to just four points and seven boards.

“I just took the challenge head on. I played in the post more in this game and I'm glad that it worked out,” the 6-foot-7 Sanjo said.

Mark Jayven Tallo, named Most Valuable Player for the second straight year, notched a double-double of 19 points and 11 rebounds for the Cobras, while Daryl Goloran provided the early spark for SWU with 12 points, all in the first half.

“I just really went with the flow in this game. Of course, I was nervous and thought about last year but I just thought about how this is the first time that they're (USC Warriors) playing in this kind of situation so I just wanted to attack, attack and attack," said Tallo who along with the Cobras finally found redemption after losing a two-game series lead and the title to the University of the Visayas last season.

Sanjo was also named to the Mythical Five team along with USC’s Victor Rabat, UV’s John Abad and University of San Jose-Recoletos’ Kevin Villafranca.

The Cobras used a sizzling 17-2 run in the first period and never looked back to hoist their second championship in four years.

    SWU came up with a 14-2 third-quarter surge for a 46-25 lead, 2:25 remaining.

Tempers flared in that stretch as USC head coach Junthy Valenzuela alleged that SWU mentor Raul “Yayoy” Alcoseba nudged one of his players, leading to a confrontation at halfcourt. Both coaches were issued technical fouls.

The coaches again clashed just before the final buzzer as the customary congratulatory handshakes nearly turned to blows before cooler heads prevailed.

Espoir Toyambi and Charles Pepitoi led USC with nine points apiece. The Warriors shot themselves in the foot as they failed to protect the ball and turned it over a whopping 39 times, 10 of that by Olago.

    The scores:

    SWU (64) - Sanjo 20, Tallo 19, Goloran 12, Luz 6, Bregondo 4, Parker 2, Mohammed 1, Pardo 0, Valdor 0.

    USC (49) - Pepito 9, Toyambi 9, Bensig 7, Laguyo 6, Magat 6, Olago 4, Tagapan 3, Asuncion 3, Laude 2, Rabat 0, Lim 0, Ecarma 0, Malana 0.
