CEBU CITY – The Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras rolled to their fifth straight victory with a 72-61 rout of the University of Cebu Webmasters in the 16th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Saturday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras set the tone as early as the first quarter where they kept the Webmasters on the back foot with a 14-0 blast that gave them a 22-8 lead.
SWU kept the pressure up and pushed their advantage to 19 points, 41-22, after two-time league MVP Macmac Tallo canned a straightaway three-pointer at the halftime buzzer.
The Webmasters tried to rally behind the shotmaking of Justine Dacalos, Peter Codilla and Gilent Delator and trimmed the deficit to just nine, 57-66. However, time was simply not on UC’s side.
Bregondo continued his resurgence with a near double-double of 16 points and nine rebounds while rookie guard Shaquille Imperial, the former Perpetual Help Altalette, chipped in 15 points, seven rebounds, five assists and four steals. Tallo finished with 14 markers and eight boards.
UC, which fell to 2-3, got a game-high 21 from Dacalos and 11 from Delator. However, JR Puerto, a member of the preseason tournament’s Mythical Five, continued his disappointing play this season as he managed just three points.
