CEBU CITY – Southwestern University opened its second round campaign with a bang, beating University of Cebu, 71-62, on Tuesday in the 17th Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras are looking to move up the standings hope to recover after a tough first round where they won just one of six assignments.
Former Adamson Falcon Gerald Fernandez led the Cobras with 16 points, six rebounds and two assists, while Edmundo Bayhonan added 15 points.
Playing heavy minutes with starting center Reeve Ugsang injured, Bayhonan played tough defense on UC’s Frederick Elombi that helped hold down the Cameroonian forward to 7 of 20 shooting.
Mac Racho scored 11, delivering eight points in a searing 19-3 run in the third period that gave the Cobras a 50-37 lead.
John Lloyd Luz also had 11 points along with four rebounds, two assists and three steals as SWU-improved to 2-5.
The Webmasters were cruising, 26-18, when the Cobras struck with an 11-2 blast capped by a buzzer-beating floater by Shaquille Imperial that put them in front, 29-28, at the break.
UC momentarily grabbed the upper hand, 34-31, but SWU-Phinma scored 14 unanswered points behind the inspired play of Racho and Heider Bilao to give the Cobras a 45-34 lead.
Michael Gonzaga stopped the UC drought with a corner triple but SWU-Phinma scored five more with Daryl Nazareno punctuating their run with a three-pointer that beat the third period buzzer.
The Webmasters, behind Elombi’s inside scoring, brought the deficit down to five, 52-57, but Bayhonan found space on an inbound play to score a wide-open lay-up, and Luz snatched the ball from UC guard Justine Dacalos at halfcourt and went all the way for a lay-up to push their lead up to nine, 61-52.
Elombi led the Webmasters with 25 points and 15 rebounds. However, he missed nine of his 20 attempts from the charity stripe and turned the ball over seven times.
The Webmasters fell to fourth spot at 4-3.
