CEBU CITY – The Southwestern University Cobras sent the University of the Visayas Green Lancers crashing to the bottom of the standings with a 71-58 victory in the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament on Thursday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The game was a rematch of last year’s finals encounter, which the Green Lancers won behind a historic fightback. But this hardly resembled one as the Cobras asserted themselves early and finished strong to grab their fourth straight win.
Two-guard Anton Pardo led the way with 16 points buoyed by four three pointers while import Landry Sanjo had 15 points and nine rebounds. The team’s other reinforcement, Bendly Valdor, chipped in 12 points, five rebounds and three steals.
UV fell to 1-3 (win-loss) and into a predicament that they have never found themselves in during the league’s 14-year history – the bottom of the standings.
Jean Marie Mpouma paced the Lancers with 14 points while guard John Abad added 12 markers. However, it was not nearly enough as leading scorer and RP Youth Team member Leonard Santillan was held down to just five points.
SWU led 13-11 after the opening 10 minutes and moved ahead by nine, 30-21, at halftime behind the efficient shooting of Valdor and stretch-four Melvin Holper.
The Cobras increased their lead to 13 before UV cut it back down to eight, 49-57, off a putback by import Jeffakins Aguara. It eventually settled at 11, 51-37, heading to the final frame after Valdor made two free-throws and reigning league MVP Mark Jayven Tallo scored on a nifty lay-up.
The proud Lancers last threatened at 55-64 after scoring six unanswered points but the Cobras simply had too many weapons asSanjo canned a mid-range jumper and Pardo hit the last of his four three-pointers to push the lead back to 14, 69-55, 1:03 left.
In the juniors division, the UV Baby Lancers atoned for their senior counterparts’ loss with a record-setting 142-36 win over the Don Bosco Greywolves. The Baby Lancers pounced on their opponents from the get-go and held Don Bosco scoreless for the entire first period – a league record – for a 29-0 lead.
Seven players reached double figures in scoring for UV led by the 27 of Orlan Wamar. JC Escalona added 23 points, nine steals and four rebounds while Theo Flores had 22 markers, 12 steals and four boards as the Baby Lancers improved to 3-0.
The Greywolves fell to 0-3.
