CEBU CITY – Cameroonian import Shooster Olago came up with a huge double-double of 20 points and 16 rebounds as University of San Carlos Warriors regained the top spot in the standings with a 69-66 win over defending champion University of the Visayas in the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Monday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The 6-foot-8 Olago capped a strong outing with four pressure-packed free-throws that turned the game in USC’s favor late, giving the Warriors their seventh win in eight games.
Charles Pepito complimented him with 11 points, six rebounds and three steals to help make up for the loss of ace wingman Ian Ortega who went down in the first period with an apparent knee injury and did not come back.
After trailing for most of the second half, the Green Lancers rallied to surge ahead, 66-65, after a three-pointer by John Abad and a lay-up by Franz Arong, with 45.4 seconds left on the clock. But that lead was short-lived as an aggressive Olago drew a foul on USC’s offensive and made two free-throws to put them back in front.
Abad had a shot to give UV back the lead but missed on his three-point try and Olago added two more free-throws to push their lead to three, 69-66, six ticks remaining. Arong’s last gasp triple then fell short and UV absorbed their fifth loss in nine games.
Jeff Aguara had 15 points for UV while Arong finished with 13.
In the juniors division, the UV Baby Lancers blew past the USC Baby Warriors, 75-60, to take hold of solo second place in the standings behind unbeaten Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu. The win was UV’s sixth in seven games while USC dropped to third place with a 4-2 record.
The trio of Jancork Cabahug, Joshua Flores and JC Escalona proved to be the biggest thorns on the side of USC as they had their way against the latter’s defense all game long.
Jancork Cabahug finished with 17 points, eight boards and two steals, while Joshua Flores added 15 points with three steals and two blocks. JC Escalona had an all-around stint with 12 points, six steals and five boards.
