SACRED Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu beat University of Cebu, 88-53, in Game Three of the Cesafi Juniors finals on Saturday to win its third straight crown in the Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
What was expected to be a tight game turned out to be an easy route to the coronation for the Magis Eagles, who led by as many as 41 points, 86-45, after a triple by John Chen, with 2:11 to go in the match.
The Magis Eagles raced off to a 20-10 lead after the opening 10 minutes of action behind the baskets of Travis Mantua, Eroll Pastor and Jed Colonia who combined for 18 in that strong surge.
A 13-2 run capped by a Colonia triple and a buzzer-beating bucket by Wayne Bersaluna gave Ateneo de Cebu a 42-24 lead at halftime.
The Magis Eagles came up with 13 unanswered points, sparked by a triple by Mantua then a floater by Pastor that came off a steal gave them a 31-point lead, 55-24, with 5:37 left in the third.
Colonia scored 20 points and grabbed eight rebounds and was named juniors Most Valuable Player.
Visser and Pastor had double-doubles, the former scoring 18 points and pulling down 10 rebounds and the later registering 13 and 12.
“The boys really played their A-game. The result is far more than what I expected, to be honest. After watching the tape of the first two games, I just pleaded with the boys to be patient with our offense and pass the ball two to three times before taking a shot. Fortunately, they followed the advice,” said Magis Eagles coach Rommel Rasmo.
Joining Colonia in the Mythical Five were Pastor and Mantua. Mangubat, who scored 18, also made the team. Completing the squad was University of the Visayas’ Jancork Cabahug.
