CEBU CITY – Two-time defending champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu made its way to the finals for the fifth year in a row after routing University of Cebu, 79-47, in the juniors competition of the 15th Cesafi basketball tournament on Saturday at the Cebu Coliseum.

Batang Gilas guard Jed Colonia provided another masterful performance with 13 points, 11 rebounds, four assists, and three steals in limited minutes for the Magis Eagles, who registered their second win in as many games in the round-robin semifinals to book a berth in the best-of-three finals.

The reigning champions have gone unbeaten in 10 games this season.

Andrew Velasco also had 13 points and anchored Ateneo de Cebu’s impregnable perimeter defense that helped limit UC’s starters to a total of 19 points.

Jelbert Umpad, the feisty Baby Webmaster court general, caved under pressure as the Magis Eagles’ leech-like defense held him scoreless just days after posting a rare triple-double in the team’s 76-66 conquest of University of San Carlos.

UC leading scorer, Froilan Mangubat, did not fare any better as he managed just six.

The Baby Webmasters was actually within striking distance after the opening period, 23-17, but suddenly got derailed by Ateneo de Cebu’s pressure defense which forced them to commit numerous turnovers, which the Magis Eagles converted into easy baskets.

In all, Ateneo de Cebu outscored UC during that stretch, 22-7, to build a huge 21-point lead, 45-24, at halftime.

The Baby Webmasters are now 1-1 and face University of the Visayas for the last finals berth on Sunday. The Baby Lancers outlasted University of San Carlos, 70-66.

Shackled by Ateneo de Cebu’s defense in their last game, talented forward Jancork Cabahug broke out for 25 points, 16 rebounds, two assists, and two steals to steer the Baby Lancer to an even 1-1 card and eliminate USC from title contention with its second straight loss.
