CEBU CITY – The fiercest rivalry in the 15th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc (Cesafi) has suddenly become an exercise in dominance for two-time defending champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu as it showed its might against University of the Visayas, 69-45, in their semifinals match on a rainy Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Magis Eagles did their thing on the defensive end as they frustrated UV’s talented forward Jancork Cabahug by limiting him to a season-low 15 points – and just a single point at halftime – to register their first win in the single round Final Four.
The top two teams at the end of the round will advance to the best-of-three finals.
The reigning champs were just ahead 17-14 at the end of the first, but cranked up the defensive pressure on the Baby Lancers in the second to pull away.
With the Baby Lancers offensive arsenal in check, Ateneo de Cebu was quick to take advantage and held their opponents to a mere seven points in the period to build a 38-21 lead at halftime.
So frustrated Cabahug was he threw a punch to the midsection of Ateneo de Cebu’s Errol Pastor during a looseball scramble in the final frame.
Fortunately for the temperamental youngster, he escaped disqualification foul and was only assessed an unsportsmanlike foul.
Heady court general Andrew Velasco led the Magis Eagles in scoring with 13 while Batang Gilas point guard Jed Colonia had an all-around game of 11 points, four rebounds, and six steals.
