CEBU — University of San Jose-Recoletos wasted a nine-point lead in the fourth but got clutch baskets from RJ Dinolan and Miguel Gastador to hack out a 71-67 win over University of Cebu in the 16th Cesafi basketball tournament on Tuesday at the Cebu Coliseum.
USJ-R moved to second place at 7-3, behind unbeaten Southwestern University and half a game ahead of University of the Visayas.
The Jaguars were leading 59-50 when the Webmasters rallied behind guard Justine Dacalos, who scored the team’s last 11 points including a lay-up that pulled them ahead, 67-66, with just 43 seconds remaining.
But UC lost track of Dinolan who streaked to the basket and got a lay-up three seconds later to put USJ-R in front, 68-67.
Dinolan then recovered the loose ball off a turnover during the Webmasters’ possession and found Gastador who drove hard, got fouled and still made the basket for an and-one that gave the Jaguars a 71-67 and seal the win with just 8.3 ticks left.
Dinolan finished with 20 points and pulled down nine rebounds, while Gastador scored 11.
Dacalos wound up with 28 points for UC, which fell to 3-7.
