CEBU CITY – University of the Visayas held steady down the stretch to fend off defending champion University of San Carlos, 72-64, for their fifth win in as many games in the 16th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Veteran guards Rey Suerte and Alfred Codilla came up big in the fourth period, combining for 13 of the team’s 16-point output to help the Lancers tie Southwestern University at the top.
Suerte finished with 17 points while Liberian forward Bassiere Sackour tallied a double-double of 15 points and 10 rebounds.
Codilla scored 14, seven coming at the start of the fourth to give the Lancers their biggest lead of the game at 63-50.
The Warriors last threatened at 59-67 after back to back baskets from big men Malcolm Tan and Conrad Catapusan, with 3:49 to play.
Suerte retaliated with a right-handed lay-up after eluding the defense. Then after USC wingman Ian Tagapan sank a floater, Suerte shut the door on the Warriors as he slashed down the lane and made another lay-in to put UV ahead, 71-61, time down to 1:21.
Catapusan scored 15 points and Kevin Oleodo added 14 for USC, which dropped to 2-3.
