CEBU CITY – University of the Visayas took the top spot in the 2018 Cesafi basketball tournament with a 80-59 dismantling of the University of Cebu on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Lancers and Webmasters ended the elimination round with identical 9-3 win-loss records but UV got the top spot with a higher point difference. The Webmasters won by just seven points, 72-65, over the Green Lancers in their match-up in the first round.
UV got off to a quick start and led 21-8 but UC took the lead, 42-40, midway through the third. The Green Lancers responded with a 16-7 finish to that stretch behind an offensive onslaught led by Rey Anthony Suerte and Michael Maestre that gave UV a 56-47 lead.
UV turned the game into a full-blown rout with a 16-4 run for a 25-point lead, 78-53.
Suerte, the 2016 MVP, led the way for UV with 19 points, nine rebounds and five assists while Gileant Delator and Josue Segumpan had 14 markers each. Jancork Cabahug also stepped up with 13 points and eight rebounds.
After starting the season with eight straight wins, things have taken a downward turn for UC, ending the second round with three losses in four games.
Things could get even more complicated for the Webmasters if University of San Jose-Recoletos wins against Cebu Institute of Technology-University on Tuesday.
That situation would create a three-way tie at 9-3 only the top two getting a twice-to-beat advantage in the Final Four. In that case, unofficial computations have USJ-R taking the top seed with UV ending up with the second seed. UC would fall to third.
Against UV, UC just could not get it going and shot a horrendous 32 percent from the field. Worse, they missed 16 of their 22 attempts from the free-throw line.
Darrell Shane Menina led the Webmasters with 16 points but shot 6-of-20. Frederick Elombi shot 5-of-18 for 12 points.
