CEBU CITY – Back-to-back Cesafi MVP Mac Tallo nailed the go-ahead three-pointer with 1.7 seconds left to help the Phinma-Southwestern University Cobras salvage third place in the 8th Cesafi Partner’s Cup with a thrilling 62-59 win over the Highlands Corned Beef-University of Cebu Webmasters at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras missed out on the finals as they had the lowest point-differential of the three teams that ended up tied at 2-1 (win-loss) after the round-robin semifinal round. But Tallo, the former Ateneo and La Salle guard, helped the Cobras take home some hardware with his late-game heroics.
With the two teams tied at 59-all after the Cobras bungled an 11-point lead, Tallo let the clock run down to its last few seconds while sizing up defender Daniel Mayol before pulling up from the top of the arc for the game-winning triple.
UC had a shot to tie the game but Justine Dacalos’ last-gasp attempt did not hit the rim as time expired.
Tallo finished the game with 13 points while former Adamson guard William Polican led the Cobras in scoring with 15.
The Cobras had the game under control as they led, 56-45, at the halfway point of the fourth. However, the Webmasters uncorked 12 straight points capped by a three-pointer by Mayol that put them ahead, 57-56.
Polican countered with a three of his own to reclaim the lead for SWU but Dacalos tied the count at 59-all with a transition bucket, leading to Tallo’s game-winner.
Dacalos led the way for UC with 11 markers, while JR Puerto chipped in 10.
