Camerooon's Shooster Olago leads way as USC Warriors beat SWU Cobras for share of group lead with La Salle

CEBU CITY – University of San Carlos got back at Cesafi champion Southwestern University with a 74-68 victory in the Philippine Collegiate Champions League Elite Eight on Friday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Warriors, runners-up to the Cobras in Cebu’s collegiate league, the  got clutch performances from Cameroonian Shooster Olago, guard Kiefer Lim and forward Nico Magat to down their bitter rivals and virtually eliminate them from contention for the national title.

Olago led the way for USC with 23 markers, while Magat and Lim added 13 and 12, respectively, as USC scored its second win in as many games for a share of the lead in Group A with the defending champion La Salle.

After trailing for the first half, the Warriors found their rhythm in the third and used a 13-4 for a 55-42 lead.

The Cobras fought back, with Melvin Holper’s triple and a split from the line by Jasper Parker pulling them to 65-66. However, Lim kept the Cobras at bay with a mid-range jumper that pushed their lead to 68-65, with 2:30 to go.

An exchange of baskets between Olago and Sanjo and a split from the line by Cobras guard Jovanie Luz sliced the deficit to two, 68-70, but Magat answered with a pull-up jumper from the right wing to up their lead to four, 72-68.

Landry Sanjo scored 20 before fouling out late in the game, Parker added 15 while Holper had 14.

Reigning Cesafi MVP Mark Jayven Tallo was held to just seven markers.
