CEBU CITY — Macmac Tallo scored 10 points in the fourth quarter as Southwestern University rallied to beat reigning champion University of San Carlos, 58-54, in the 16th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

SWU fell behind by 15 points but Tallo took charge in the fourth, highlighting the  Cobras’ rally with an and-one play that them in front for good, 51-49.

Two-time MVP Tallo finished with 17 points and five rebounds, rookie Shaquille Imperial scored 11 and Bernie Bregondo added 10 markers.

The win gave SWU a sweep of USC this season and stretched its win streak to seven games while pushing down the Warriors to 2-5 (win-loss).

SWU was coming off a pulsating 75-67 win over University of the Visayas but looked lethargic against the Warriors, who pushed the pace on both ends of the floor.

USC was ahead, 49-44, after a bucket from rookie Jules Langres with 4:22 to go when Tallo and backcourt mate John Lloyd Luz scored a basket each to pull SWU to 48-49. Tallo again scored while getting fouled by USC guard Bryan Divinagracia and made the bonus free-throw to give the Cobras a 51-49 lead.

USC had a shot to retake the lead but forward Malcolm Tan split his charities. Luz, Imperial and Bregondo then put the game away by making their free-throws in the game’s dying seconds.

The scores:

SWU Cobras 58 — Tallo 17, Imperial 11, Bregondo 10, Luz 9, Racho 5, Polican 3, Molina 2,

USC Warriors 54 — Catacutan 10, Ntumba 8, Tan 8, Divinagracia 6, Langres 5, Oleodo 5, Laguyo 3, Rabat 2, Tagapan 2, Tubiano 1

Quarterscores: 7-12; 21-32; 33-40; 54-58.
