CEBU CITY – Filipino-Samoan Juju Bautista continued to boost his stock down south after yet another monster game of 20 points and 15 rebounds to power Southwestern University to a 71-60 victory over University of Cebu in the 15th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament on Thursday night at the Cebu Coliseum here.

The Cobras’ prized recruit from San Diego made mincemeat of the Webmasters’ interior defense during a pivotal 18-5 third quarter run that broke the game wide open.

It was the fifth win in seven games for the Cobras, who tied idle University of the Visayas in second place.

University of San Carlos remains on top with a 6-1 win-loss card.

The Cobras found themselves in a dogfight at the onset of the second half as the Webmasters trimmed the deficit to 34-35 behind baskets by JR Puerto and Daniel Mayol.

However, the Cobras responded with a telling run sparked by – ironically - former Webmaster Jan Auditor.

Bautista, nicknamed ‘Baby Rock’ then went to work against the woefully undersized frontline of UC, scoring three straight buckets, all inside the shaded lane to help the Cobras built a 53-41 lead heading to the final frame.

An 11-4 start to the fourth capped by a crafty lay-in by John Lloyd Luz off a gorgeous hand-off fake, and a putback by Mac Tallo pushed the Cobras further ahead, 64-43, midway in the quarter.

The Webmasters tried to rally behind seven straight points by Justine Dacalos to slice the deficit to a dozen, but Bautista shut the door on UC following a coast-to-coast lay-up.

Auditor scored 14 points against his former team, the same output of Luz.

Tallo was limited to just eight points, but grabbed 14 rebounds and had four assists.

The Webmasters was led by the 11 of Dacalos.

UC shot itself in the foot behind a woeful 7-of-59 field goal from beyond the arc and fell to 3-4.

In the juniors division, the USC Baby Warriors finally broke out of their two-game slump with a 75-58 rout of the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars.

USC now sports a 5-2 card following a balanced attack led by Alje Mendez, who topbilled with 14 points.

USJ-R fell to 4-3.
