CEBU CITY — Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu closed in on a fourth straight Cesafi Juniors title as it dominated University of Cebu, 69-45, in Game One of the best-of-three finals on Friday at the Cebu Coliseum.

The Magis eagles, who lost twice to the Baby Webmasters this season, raced to a 21-6 lead in the first period, extended the lead to 29 in the third quarter, 53-24, and was never threatened.

UC trimmed the deficit to 16, but SHS again pulled away with Eroll Pastor, Coco Tuadles and Jed Colonia teamed up in an 11-1 run that pushed their lead back to 26 points, 65-39.

Pastor led the way for the Magis Eagles with 16 points and seven rebounds, Andrew Velasco came off the bench and chipped in 15 points while reigning MVP Colonia had 12 points, four rebounds, three assists, two steals and two blocks.

UC had a struggling start, firing up four shots that hit nothing but the board as well as an airball. Head coach Joever Samonte got so desperate for a spark that at one point in the third, he sent in Gelmart Umpad and Mardy Soco, who both stand a shade under five-feet, and the 5-foot Joseph Santome.

Umpad, who scored 30 points against the Magis Eagles in their meeting in the semifinals, was hounded relentlessly by Ateneo de Cebu defenders from defensive specialist Justin Javelosa to Tuadles and even the 6-foot-2 Colonia.

The UC guard managed just four points, missing all 12 of his attempts from the field.

The scores:

Sacred Heart 69 - Pastor 16, Velasco 15, Colonia 12, Manaytay 5, Tuadles 5, Visser 4, Mantua 3, Nacua 3, Chua 2, P. Yu 2.

University of Cebu 45 - Cuyos 9, Abejo 6, Ordeniza 6, Angco 5, Gabisan 4, Umpad 4, Casera 3, Resilla 3, Soco 3, Enriquez 2.

Quarterscores: 21-6; 39-20; 54-29; 69-45
