Jaguars squeak past winless Wildcats in Cesafi basketball
USJ-R’s RJ Dinolan rises for a shot as CIT-U defenders look on.

CEBU CITY — University of San Jose-Recoletos pulled away late to beat Cebu Institute of Technology-University, 80-76, on Tuesday in the 16th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Jaybie Mantilla scored 24 points and added seven rebounds, three assists and two steals as the Jaguars scored their second win in three games.

RJ Dinolan added 16 points and 12 rebounds, Miguel Gastador chipped in 13 points and rookie wingman Victor Nunez scored 12.

The match was tied at 64 after a deuce by Karl Lucena before Mighty Sports-backed USJ-R uncorked a 7-1 run for a 71-65 lead with 4:09 to go.

CIT-U kept at it and trimmed the deficit to three, 72-75, after an and-one from Wildcats’ forward Rey Navarro. USJ-R big man Nelvin Navarra scored down low off a great feed by Dinolan to push their lead back to five, 77-72, with 52.7 seconds remaining.

Navarro finished with 19 points, while Wilkins Sanchez and Lucena had 11 apiece for the Wildcats, winless in three outings.

CIT-U 76 — Navarro 19, Sanchez 11, Lucena 11, Bucao 10, Pono 9, Rosell 4, Alicaway 4, Munez 2, Ariar 2.
