CEBU CITY — Cameroonian Shooster Olago scored 11 of his 19 points in overtime and Congo’s Espoir Toyambi came up with a huge double-double of 15 points and 11 rebounds as University of San Carlos downed reigning champion University of the Visayas, 83-74, on Saturday in the Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

The 6-foot-7 Olago capped off his stellar performance with a thunderous tomahawk slam for the Warriors’ first win of the tournament. Olago, who cut his chin late in regulation during a looseball scramble, also had nine rebound and three steals.

Christian Laude added 13 points for the Warriors, who led by as many as 13 points, 40-27, early in the third period before the Lancers came back and pulled to within one, 65-66, after free-throws from Alfred Codilla and RP Youth Team member Leonard Santillan.

Toyambi was fouled but could not take the free-throws after suffering from cramps and Olago made one of the two shots for a 67-65 USC lead with 12.1 ticks left.

UV’s ace guard John Abad, who had sat all but 1:20 of the final frame, came up big as he sped downcourt and made the equalizing floater with four seconds remaining. USC’s Kiefer Lim had a clean shot at the game-winner but his halfcourt heave went in and out at the fourth period buzzer.

In overtime, Olago combined with wingman Ian Ortega to score the first 12 points as the Warriors pulled away, 79-72, with 34.2 seconds left. Abad swished in two free-throws to pull UV within five but Lim countered with two from the line and later on, Olago leaked out for a breakaway slam for the final tally.

The Lancers, who got 22 from Santillan and 11 from Abad, find themselves in unfamiliar territory as they fell to 1-2.

In juniors action, the Cebu Eastern College Dragons evened their record at 1-1 after they smothered Don Bosco, 77-44, even as the UV Baby Lancers scored their second straight win, beating the University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars, 77-64. The USC Baby Warriors also got their second win in a row, defeating the University of Cebu Baby Webmasters, 61-49.
