Jaybie Mantilla takes charge in endgame to lift USJR Jaguars past USC Warriors

CEBU CITY — Jaybie Mantilla scored six points and dished out two assists in the last two minutes to help push University of San Jose-Recoletos past defending champions University of San Carlos, 75-69, on Sunday in the 16th Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Mantilla wound up with 18 points and 12 rebounds, with six assists and two steals. The thrilling victory gave USJ-R a share of second place in the standings with the reeling University of the Visayas Green Lancers at 6-3.

Mantilla calmly made two free-throws to tie the game at 67 with 1:53 to go, then scored a lay-in to give the Jaguars the lead.

He made an assist to big man Nelvin Navarra for a 71-67 lead.

The Warriors closed the gap, 69-71, but Mantilla found Navarra once again for another bucket to give them a four-point cushion, 73-69.

Mantilla then stole the ball shortly after the Warriors inbounded it, got fouled and made two from the line to seal the victory.

RJ Dinolan led the Jaguars in scoring with 23 points, while Navarra had 10 points and 13 boards.

Kevin Oleodo scored 21 points for USC, all from beyond the three-point arc. Conrad Catapusan and Scottie Ntumba had 13 points apiece for the Warriors which fell to 5-5.

USC 69 — Oleodo 23, Catapusan 13, Ntumba 13, Langres 6, Tagapan 5, Ecarma 3, Laguyo 2, Rabat 2, Muñez 2, Tan 0, Divinagracia 0.
