CEBU CITY – Cebu Institute of Technology-University kept its semifinal hopes alive with a 76-69 victory over University of Cebu in the 15th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.

With league leading scorer Joshua dela Cerna held in check, Allan Dimco stepped up to carry the load for the Wildcats as he piled up a monster double-double of 24 points and 19 rebounds as the team improved to a 4-6 slate and keep within striking distance of current fourth-placer University of San Jose-Recoletos (4-5).

Left-handed big man Jeffrey Taghoy also aided the Wildcats’ cause with a near double-double of 13 points and eight rebounds while dela Cerna had a silent 12 points, no thanks to UC’s swarming defense on him.

The Wildcats now need to sweep their remaining games against league-leading University of San Carlos Warriors and the winless University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers for a shot at making the Final Four.

The loss dropped the Wildcats at 3-6, although the team mathematically still has a chance of making the semis should it sweep its last three outings against USC, Southwestern University, and USJ-R, and hope the Jaguars and the Wildcats falter in their remaining assignments.

JR Puerto led UC with 16 while Justine Dacalos, who suffered a large gash on his brow after getting hit by a wayward Dimco elbow, finished with 15.
