CEBU CITY — Southwestern University exploded in overtime to top University of San Jose-Recoletos, 85-75, on Tuesday and stretched their winning streak to eight games in the 16th Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

Mac Tallo, Congolese cener Quintin Nzusi and veteran guard John Lloyd Luz led the way anew as SWU was again made to work hard for the win in another overtime battle — the Cobras also needed extra minutes to defeat the Jaguars.

Tallo led the way for the Cobras with 22 points including a triple that extended SWU’s lead to 82-75, with 1:37 to go in overtime.

Luz scored 21 while Nzusi punished his former team with a monster double-double of 20 points and 14 rebounds with four blocks.

The Jaguars took a 71-69 lead as Victor Nunez canned a three-pointer with 1:24 left in the fourth.

But Cobras’ rookie Shaquille Imperial knotted the score at 71 with two pressure-packed free-throws, 32.5 ticks left.

SWU gained possession after USJ-R forward RJ Dinolan flubbed a lay-up, however, the ball slipped from Tallo’s hands as he was going up for a baseline jumper as time expired.

The Jaguars drew first blood in overtime after a banked-in jumper by Tricky Peromingan. But that proved to be USJ-R’s last hurrah as SWU uncorked a 14-2 blast sparked by two quick buckets by Nzusi and a free-throw by Tallo for a 76-73 lead.

RJ Dinolan scored 15, Janjan Pastias and Peromingan had 13 points each and Nelvin Navarra added 12 for USJ-R, which fell to 4-3.
