CEBU CITY — Nigerian import Jeffakins Aguara was scratched from the University of the Visayas varsity squad on Thursday for his role in the near-melee in the endgame of the Cesafi semifinal game between the Green Lancers and University of San Carlos Warriors last week.

The ruling was made after officials learned Aguara had also clashed with teammates during practice even when he was still with the training team, according to team manager Gerald Anthony “Samsam” Gullas.

Last week, Aguara was confronted by teammate Franz Arong for failing to defend against a rival import, triggering a scuffle

“Initially, I thought that this was an isolated incident but apparently, this has happened several times already. It happened in Cordova when he (Aguara) was playing with Team B. I also got feedback that there has also been scuffles with his teammates during practice,” said Gullas.

“I just cannot have this kind of attitude affect the team negatively. What happened during the USC-UV game was a culmination of a lot of negative vibes. Perhaps this could have been a different story had the issues between him (Aguara) and the players were hashed out internally. Sadly, that was not the case.”

But Gullas, also an assistant vice president at UV, kept the door open for Aguara to prove his worth and don the Green Lancers’ jersey in the future.

“If he proves himself in Team B just like what (former import) Steve Akomo is doing, then why not?”

Aguara wrote a letter of apology but it was not enough as he failed to make his case in a meeting with Gullas.

“When I confronted him with the feedback from his teammates, all he said was his teammates were mad at him for taking their playing time.”
