CEBU CITY — University of San Jose-Recoletos advanced to the finals of the 8th Cesafi Partner’s Cup, sweeping the rug from under University of the Visayas, 79-72, on Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Three teams wound up with 2-1 win-loss records after the round-robin semifinals, with Mighty Sports USJ-R and Worthy UV moving on to the finals by points differential.
Southwestern University won in overtime against University of Cebu, 86-79, to also finish at 2-1.
The Jaguars claimed the No. 1 seed with their +5 points differential, while UV was +1 and SWU at -1 points.
The opener of the best-of-three title showdown is set on Thursday.
After winning eight straight games dating back to the elimination round, UV had all but assured itself of a finals seat barring a blowout loss. But early on, that appeared to be what the Green Lancers were heading towards as they trailed, 40-58, in the third period. An 11-2 run though, trimmed the deficit to nine, 51-60.
USJ-R led by 18 in the third before UV rallied and got to within three, 68-71, in the fourth, but the Jaguars held on for the win.
Miguel Gastador and Tricky Peromingan led the Jaguars with 17 points each, while Jaybie Mantilla had 14 points and 11 rebounds.
Rookie guard Tristan Albina led the Green Lancers with 21 points.
