Fil-Brit Luke Woodland set for Azkals debut after finally getting Fifa clearance

    Jun 16, 2015

LUKE Woodland has been cleared to play for the Philippine men’s football team in its Fifa World Cup Qualifiers match against Yemen on Tuesday night in Qatar.

The touted Azkals recruit missed the opener against Bahrain on home soil after failing to get clearance from the Fifa Players’ Status Committee since the Filipino-British defender played his youth career for England.

But the Philippine Football Federation (PFF) has gained the clearance for the 19-year-old former Bolton Wanderers youth player’s change of “sporting nationality."

PFF general secretary Atty. Edwin Gastanes confirmed the development on the eve of the match.

The process took a while to complete as Woodland needed the approval of three other Fifa member associations in Ireland, Wales, and Scotland, apart from England, officials said.

Woodland is expected to see action or even start as a wingback as the Azkals seek to continue their promising start following a 2-1 win over Bahrain last week.
