CEBU CITY —University of San Jose-Recoletos completed the semifinal cast with an emphatic 73-53 rout of University of Cebu on Saturday in the 15th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Jaguars took charge in the third period and never looked back, finishing the double round-robin elimination round with an even 6-6 win-loss card to take the No. 4 seeding in the semifinals that start on Tuesday. UC finished sixth with a 4-8 card.
USJ-R pulled away with a 7-0 run at the end of the third quarter for a 51-44 lead. Then RJ Dinolan led a 14-3 run that gave them a 65-49 lead with 2:40 remaining.
Dinolan, who sat out most of the match because of foul trouble, came alive and scored six on a variety of lay-ups inside the shaded lane during that telling run and finished with 12. Villafranca led the team in scoring with 18, while Mac Labares had 15 points, six rebounds and three steals.
Rookie guard Jaybie Mantilla came off the bench to post a double-double of 10 points and 11 boards laced with three assists. Dinolan scored 12.
Melvin Butohan led UC with 12 points, Clint Suelto added 11 and Fil Culango had 10 but Justine Dacalos was held down to just six.
