CEBU CITY — Nine-time Cesafi champion University of the Visayas pounced on hapless University of Cebu from the get-go and never let up in a 91-62 victory on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Lancers used a 31-9 start to cruise to their sixth win in eight games, joining idle Southwestern University in second place.
Seldom-used reserve JV Veloso showcased what he can do as he scored eight of his team-high 13 points during that searing stretch.
Rookie wingman Rey Suerte added eight points in the second canto, all on uncontested lay-ups as UC just could not get a handle on the ball, leading to leak outs and transition attacks by UV’s guards as the Lancers extended their lead to 26 at halftime, 51-25.
Suerte and Alwyn Aguirre scored 10 apiece for the Lancers.
Melvin Butohan and Fil Culango had 10 points apiece for UC, which now holds a 3-5 win-loss card, good for a tie for fourth place with Cebu Institute of Technology-University.
