CEBU CITY — University of the Visayas locked up the top spot in the semifinals, fighting back from a 10-point third period deficit to beat Southwestern University, 75-60, in the 15th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Saturday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The win tied UV with University of San Carlos with 10-2 win-loss slates at the end of the double round-robin elimination round but the Lancers took the top seed in the semifinals due to their 74-43 win over the Warriors recently.
Down 33-43 after Melvin Holper and Anton Pardo canned back-to-back triples for the Cobras, the Lancers turned to Jun Manzo, who scored 14 points in a decisive 17-3 run that put them ahead, 58-51.
Still, the game was still in reach for the Cobras as they trailed by just eight, 56-64, when big man Juju Bautista went down with a right ankle sprain. X-rays later revealed no serious damage.
Two-time league MVP Mac Tallo also went hobbling in the fourth and did not return.
The Lancers delivered the knockout punch with eight straight points, six from Franz Arong.
Manzo finished with 19 points, while Arong had 12.
UV will open the single round-robin semis with a match against USJ-R, while second seed USC will tangle with SWU. The top two teams at the end of the round will advance to the best-of-five title series.
