Magis Eagles down Baby Warriors for seventh straight win in Cesafi juniors

CEBU CITY — The two-time defending champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu clobbered University of San Carlos, 73-48, on Monday to stretch its unbeaten run to seven games in the Cesafi juniors basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.

The stage was set for a fierce battle between the two top teams in the high school division but the Magis Eagles started the game with guns blazing, racing off to a 17-7 start after the first that ballooned to 31-16 at halftime.

Former Batang Gilas guard Jed Colonia then finished off USC by scoring 11 straight in the fourth, anchoring a blistering 22-4 windup.

Colonia finished with 21 points, five rebounds, four steals and two assists.

Andrew Velasco scored 16, Errol Pastor chipped in 12 and Patrick Yu came up with 11 for the Magis Eagles.

The Baby Warriors suffered their second straight loss and fell to 4-2 for the season.

Alje Mendez was the lone double-digit scorer for USC with 13, while Briedyn Smith was held down to four points.

Meanwhile, Jancork Cabahug exploded for 41 points and 22 rebounds to tow University of the Visayas (4-3) to a 79-75 win over Cebu Eastern College (1-6).
