CEBU CITY — Jaybie Mantilla had 21 points and 10 rebounds as University of San Jose-Recoletos beat University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 69-60, on Saturday in the 16th Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Mantilla also had three assists and three steals as the Jaguars scored their eighth win in 11 games, ahead of the University of the Visayas, which holds a 7-4 win-loss card.
RJ Dinolan added 15 points and nine boards for USJ-R, which erased a six-point deficit in the fourth period.
Mantilla who led the attack that enabled them to overhaul the deficit and grab the lead, 59-58.
A midrange jumper by Victor Nunez, two free-throws from Albert Catiloc and an uncontested lay-in by Nelvin Navarra pushed USJ-R’s lead to 65-58, with 1:03 to play.
USPF forward Kimo Bajamunde trimmed the deficit to five with a lay-up, before USJ-R secured the win with a transition bucket from Tricky Peromingan and two free-throws by Mantilla.
Bajamunde scored 13 while Kenneth Cada had 11 for the Panthers, who suffered their eighth loss in 10 outings.
