CEBU CITY — Team Slaughter leaned on the firepower of two MVPs to crush Team Fajardo, 125-100, in the 2018 Cesafi All Star Game on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cesafi adopted the NBA format for this year’s event, with University of Cebu coach Yayoy Alcoseba and University of the Visayas coach Gary Cortes picking players from a pre-selected pool for teams representing the league most distinguished alumni Greg Slaughter of Barangay Ginebra and June Mar Fajardo of San Miguel.
This led to 2016 MVP Rey Suerte of UV and reigning MVP Jaybie Mantilla of USJ-R teaming up for Team Slaughter to rain down three-pointers in a crucial third period blitz that gave them a 92-72 lead.
Suerte tallied 21 points, six rebounds, eight assists and two steals, and was named the game's MVP. He was joined in the Mythical Five by Mantilla, who had 17 points, eight rebounds and nine assists, University of San Carlos’ John Reel Saycon who had 14 points and 10 rebounds, and John Jabello and Kenny Rocacurva who scored 13 each.
The high school All Star Game saw Team Desiderio, representing University of the Philippines star Paul Desiderio – a former UV product – defeat Team Tallo of current NLEX guard Mark Jayven Tallo, 110-86.
University of the Visayas’ Joshua Yerro had 24 points, seven rebounds, three assists and six steals. His Baby Lancers teammates Popoy Actub and Beirn Laurente had 15 points apiece to help them rise from a 21-point halftime deficit.
Completing the high school Mythical Five were Koko Tuadles of SHS-Ateneo de Cebu, who scored 11, and Khadshein Tagalog of USC, who scored 10.
