CEBU CITY — Southwestern University remained in contention for a spot in the semifinal round after cruising past University of Southern Philippines Foundation, 80-53, on Saturday in the 17th Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Cobras took control in the third with a huge 14-2 run sparked by Daryl Nazareno and Shaquille Imperial, turning a six-point lead into an 18-point cushion, 58-40.
Imperial scored 16 points spiked by four triples and had five rebounds and two steals, while William Polican had 15 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists.
Edmundo Bayhonan came off the bench and put up 14 markers and eight boards, while Nazareno chipped in 11 to help SWU-Phinma win their fourth game against six losses and keep within striking distance of the University of Cebu, running fourth with a 5-5 card.
SWU-Phinma held a 44-38 lead before Nazareno hit two straight triples and Imperial canned another at the third period buzzer to put them up by 18.
A 9-2 run gave the Cobras a 25-point lead, 67-42.
RR Cauba scored 12 for the Panthers, who dropped to 3-8, sixth in the seven-team tournament.
