CEBU CITY — Cebu Institute of Technology-University grabbed its first win of the semifinal round, upsetting the erstwhile unbeaten Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu, 60-57, on Tuesday in the Cesafi juniors basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
The Wildkittens squandered a double digit lead and allowed the Magis Eagles to get to within two points, 52-54, with two minutes remaining but held on for the win, ending SHS’s 11-game win streak
A free-throw by Eagles forward Janjan Jaboneta and an inside stab by Zachy Huang trimmed the deficit to just one, 57-58,with 9.8 ticks left but Wildkitten guard Edgardo Acop made two before stealing the ball on the Eagles’ next offensive to seal the crucial victory, their first in four tries in the double round-robin semifinals.
The SHS squad got stuck in a massive traffic jam caused by fire in Barangay Luz and the Magis Eagles arrived at the venue just five minutes before tip-off.
CIT-U pounced on the cold SHS side and zoomed off to a 10-3 lead after the first 10 minutes of action and was ahead, 48-23, at the start of the final canto.
Justin Langres scored 15 points and five rebounds, while Joshua Manatad added 12 markers, five boards and three steals for CIT-U.
Huang paced the Eagles with 16 points and eight boards while Joshua Sinclair chipped in 10 points and seven rebounds. Jaboneta, who was supposed to be sit out the match because of an injured leg, ended up playing in the second half and wound up with eight points.
