CEBU CITY – Cebu Institute of Technology-University again pulled the rug from under University of the Visayas with a 93-88 victory Sunday in the 15th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum here.

The Wildcats started strong and finished even stronger in pulling off the stunning win that brought back memories of the same feat they did against the Lancers last season when they ended a 14-year losing streak against the powerhouse team.

The dynamic duo of Joshua dela Cerna and Allan Dimco proved to be unstoppable as each had 28 points, with Dimco adding eight rebounds, two steals, and two blocks to cap the Wildcats’ third win in seven outings.

CIT-U raced to an early 21-9 lead behind dela Cerna, who scattered 12 points on an assortment of perimeter jumpers in the first quarter.

But the Lancers were quick to answer back and tied the game at the break, 46-all.

The score remained tied at 72-72 at the start of the fourth when the Wildcats made their move and led, 79-74, after a Dimco deuce.

UV stayed close and pulled to within three, 82-85, but CIT-U was unfazed as dela Cerna and Dimco countered with midrange jumpers to push the lead to nine with 2:51 to go.

The Lancers stayed within striking distance, 85-90, and had a shot of trimming the deficit after Rey Suerte stole the ball at halfcourt. But Lemuel Sanchez hustled back and swiped the ball away, leading to the game-sealing free-throws by him and Jose Marlo Pono.

UV fell to a 5-2 record despite getting 22 points from Jun Manzo and 17 from Suerte.

However, Cameroonian Steve Akomo had a dreadful game and ended with just seven markers.

In the juniors division, reigning champion Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu pushed its winning streak to six games as it routed University of Cebu (5-3), 76-62, behind the stellar performances of Errol Pastor and Travis Mantua.

Pastor had 19 points and seven rebounds, while Mantua had 18 points, two rebounds, five assists, and two steals.

The University of San Jose-Recoletos Baby Jaguars (4-2) also triumphed over Don Bosco (0-7), 71-42.
