CEBU CITY – The University of the Visayas Green Lancers won their second straight game after cruising past the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers, 92-79, in the 17th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament yesterday at the New Cebu Coliseum.
After a lackluster start to the season, reigning league MVP Rey Suerte found his groove and tallied 21 points, five rebounds, four assists and two steals to help the Green Lancers win their second game in a row after losing their season-opener to the University of San Carlos.
Skipper Josue Segumpan had 16 points marked by four triples, Tristan Albina scored all 13 of his points in the first half, Jerome Napao chipped in 12 while versatile forward Monic Soliva logged in a double-double of 10 points and 13 rebounds to boost UV’s record to 2-1 (win-loss).
The Panthers started strong and led 20-18 after the first quarter. However, USPF could not sustain its momentum and trailed 38-50 at halftime after UV uncorked a 20-8 run capped by seven straight points from Albina.
UV increased the lead to a high of 24, 71-47, as the Green Lancers unleashed a 14-2 blitz highlighted by a gorgeous lay-up by Suerte, that saw him hang in the air for a split-second longer before flipping the ball up and into the basket.
USPF trimmed the gap to 10, 79-89, but ran out of time to lose their second straight after opening the season with a victory over the Cebu Institute of Technology-University. Lyndon Colina led the Panthers with 17 points.
