CEBU CITY – The University of the Visayas Green Lancers booked their place in the semifinal round after ousting the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Panthers, 98-73, in the quarterfinals of the 16th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament on Tuesday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Playing with a sense of urgency that was nowhere to be found during their inconsistent run in the second round of the classification phase, the Lancers gave the Panthers no room to breathe especially in the third where they outscored them, 24-9, to build a huge 30-point lead, 72-42.
The win placed UV in the Final Four where they join the unbeaten Southwestern University-Phinma Cobras and the defending champions University of San Carlos Warriors.
Tristan Albina, UV’s prized recruit from Dumaguete City, shot the lights out as he sank four three-pointers and finished with a team-high 18 points. Albina did not miss a beat from the weekend when he won the league’s Three-Point Shootout.
Rey Suerte added 17 while Liberian forward Bassiere Sackor pulled down 17 rebounds to go with his 12 points.
Kimo Bajamunde led the Panthers with 23 points but it was not enough to keep them from taking an early vacation as usual reliables Roy Quiachon and Lyndon Colina combined for just 13.
