CEBU — Motivated after an All-Star snub, wingman Tricky Peromingan scored 30 points to lift University of San Jose-Recoletos past Cebu Institute of Technology-University, 95-89, on Tuesday in the 16th Cesafi basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum.
Peromingan punctuated his career-high by making two free-throws with 9.5 seconds left that sealed the win and secured the second seed for the Jaguars in the quarterfinal round.
Jaybie Mantilla scored 20, while RJ Dinolan had 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Miguel Gastador added 11 but missed three free throws with 26.6 seconds remaining that would have iced the victory for USJ-R after CIT-U pulled within four, 89-93, with a little over a minute left.
But the Wildcats wasted a chance to trim the gap as Marlo Pono’s inbound sailed out of bounds leading to Peromingan’s crucial free throws.
USJ-R (9-3) will face CIT-U in the next round needing only to win once to advance to the semifinals.
Defending champion University of San Carlos will go up against University of Cebu in the quarterfinals, while University of the Visayas faces off with University of Southern Philippines Foundation.
