SWU Cobras, USC Warriors set up another title showdown in Cebu

    Oct 26, 2014

CEBU CITY — For the second time in a week, Southwestern University and University of San Carlos will face off in a title showdown after they got past their respective semifinal opponents in the Asian Universities Basketball Championship on Saturday at the USC gym.

The recently-crowned Cesafi champions Cobras dominated University of the Visayas, 81-70, while the Warriors routed the visiting Myongji University of South Korea, 92-74.

After getting blown out by Myongji University, 73-83, in their elimination round game last Friday, the Cobras bounced back and turned the game around in the third period with an 11-0 run spearheaded by Mark Tallo.  Cameroonian Landry Sanjo pumped in 10 of his 23 points in the final frame to help finish off the Green Lancers.

The Green Lancers were within striking distance and were only down by three, 39-42, when Tallo found his groove, scoring on a pull-up jumper and a corner triple before adding a scoop shot in transition that pushed the Cobras ahead, 53-39.

UV did not go away though, and pulled to within six, 53-59, behind buckets by Monic Soliva and Alwyn Aguirre at the end of the third.  Sanjo scored six straight at the start of the final frame to give SWU a 65-53 advantage.

Tallo finished with 16 points, Daryl Goloran added 12 and John Lloyd Luz chipped in 10 to give SWU a chance to add a second championship this month.

Aguirre paced the Lancers with 13 while Soliva added 10.
