CEBU CITY – The North All-Stars squandered a 29-point lead but recovered in overtime to turn back the South All-Stars, 99-91, in the Cesafi All Star game on Sunday at the Cebu Coliseum.
Cameroonian import Shooster Olago of the University of San Carlos was named Most Valuable Player, scoring 27 points including an undergoal stab with 1:03 remaining in the extra session that put the North in front for good.
The North, composed of players from USC, University of the Visayas and University of Cebu, led 47-18 late in the second period but the South’s offense came up with a 15-0 run that brought the deficit down to 56-66 in the third.
The South, featuring players from Southwestern University, University of San Jose-Recoletos and Cebu Institute of Technology-University, pulled to within a point after a putback by SWU’s Cameroonian import Landry Sanjo.
But two free-throws by Olago and a jumper by UV’s Rhaffy Octobre pushed the lead back up to five, 81-76, with 1:11 to go.
A corner triple by SWU’s Anton Pardo sliced the deficit to two but USC’s Victor Rabat split his charities to peg the North’s lead at three, 82-79.
USJ-R skipper James Regalado then came up big as he splashed in a triple with 3.4 ticks left to knot the count at 82 and send the game into overtime.
Olago muscled in a reverse lay-up off a feed from Octobre before UV guard John Abad sealed the win with six straight free-throws and lay-up.
Octobre finished with 21 points, Franz Arong had 17 and Abad had 12.
Sanjo came up with 25 points for the South, while Mark Jayven Tallo added 16 and Regalado had 15.
Anton Pardo won the three-point shootout, edging Rabat in the sudden-death final, 6-5. The foreigners division of the slam dunk competition was won by Olago who jumped over three people for his final dunk. Leonard Santillan was named as top local slam dunker.
