CEBU CITY – A win does not a champion make.
This was the message that University of Cebu head coach Yayoy Alcoseba sent to his Webmasters as they try to wrest the title away from the University of the Visayas Green Lancers ahead of Game 2 of the best-of-three finals series in the 17th Cesafi men’s basketball tournament, on Friday afternoon at the Cebu Coliseum.
UC holds a 1-0 series lead after pulling off an 85-77 win over the defending champions in Game 1, to stand on the precipice of hoisting their very first title since 2011, when it still stood on the broad shoulders of current PBA MVP June Mar Fajardo.
Clinching the crown will be no cakewalk as Alcoseba anticipates a huge fightback from the 11-time Cesafi champions.
“They will come back strong. It’s the UV spirit. So we have to take the challenge and play the right way,” said Alcoseba, who in his first year on the job has taken the Webmasters farther than they have in the last five years.
Even with the Green Lancers bearing down on them in the game’s crucial moments, the Webmasters did not blink and got key baskets from sentinels Frederick Elombi, John Jabello and Justine Dacalos to put down UV.
“The word fear isn’t in my vocabulary. Same with my team,” Alcoseba added.
For UV head coach Gary Cortes, being down 0-1 in the series is a huge test of character for his team, as they try to find their bearings and send the series to a decider this weekend.
“UC clearly outplayed us in all aspects of the game – rebounding, speed and the will to win. We will surely make lots of adjustments especially on defense,” said Cortes.
