THE Philippine Azkals capped their final build-up for the 2019 Asian Cup with a narrow 3-2 win over Fiji on Tuesday night at the Rizal Memorial Coliseum.
Phil Younghusband, Pika Minegishi and Kevin Ingreso all got on the scoreline, but two goals conceded late put the Azkals and head coach Thomas Dooley under the microscope ahead of their historic clash against Tajikistan on Tuesday.
The Azkals dictated the tempo through their high press to put the visiting side on their heels. Younghusband opened the scoring on the 29th minute as he claimed his 49th international goal from the penalty won by Misagh Bahadoran.
Minegishi, who came in for Iain Ramsay at the half, quickly made his presence felt with a beautiful goal from outside the box in the 53rd minute before Ingreso scored the goal of the night as he teed off a volley from screaming distance in the 61st minute.
But the game took a queer turn late in the match as the Azkals' defense got broken down late by the visitors, whose counters finally paid off as Ame Votoniu scored on the counter in the 74th minute.
The second goal came when substitute 'keeper Nick O'Donnell was caught in a one on one situation before conceding a penalty.
Roy Krishna converted from the spot in the 80th minute.
