THE Sacred Heart School-Ateneo de Cebu Magis Eagles scored the game’s last 10 points to oust the University of the Visayas (UV) Baby Lancers, 48-41, and return to the finals of the Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) high school basketball tournament at the Cebu Coliseum on Thursday.
Down three, 38-41, with 2:22 left in the game after UV guard Albert Sacayan hit a long step-back three-pointer at the shot-clock buzzer, Ateneo de Cebu came right back and pulled ahead, 42-41, after a putback by Reymark Narbasa and a perimeter jumper by Ariel Dinglasan, with 1:32 remaining.
After consecutive misses by UV’s Zylle Cabellon, Magis Eagles wingman LA Casinillo sealed the win and Ateneo de Cebu’s first finals appearance in three years by canning four straight free-throws.
Casinillo led Ateneo de Cebu with 10 points and five rebounds, while Ariel Dinglasan had nine points, seven boards and two steals. Mike Boniel flirted with a triple-double as he piled up seven points, six rebounds and eight steals.
Ateneo de Cebu now awaits the winner of the do-or-die match between the reigning champions University of Cebu Baby Webmasters and the University of Southern Philippines Foundation Baby Panthers on Saturday, November 16.
