At the point of UC’s attack was its mighty mouse of a guard, Gelmart Umpad, who carved up Ateneo de Cebu’s stout defense for an astounding 30 points.
Umpad’s offensive exploits baffled the Magis Eagles no end that Ateneo de Cebu head coach Rommel Rasmo could only shake his head after the 4-foot-11 guard buried the last of his five three-pointers.
“You have to give it to the kid. He made us all look stupid today,” quipped Rasmo of Umpad’s all-around performance that included five assists, two steals and even a block.
The spunky playmaker from the town of Medellin in the northern part of Cebu, punctuated his performance by making two free throws with four seconds left that sealed UC’s rousing win.
Kyle Ordeniza backed Umpad up with a near double-double of 12 points and nine rebounds laced with five steals. Luigi Gabisan and Johnbryl Cuyos added 10 apiece to help UC deal Ateneo de Cebu their second loss of the season.
Reigning MVP Jed Colonia led the way for Ateneo de Cebu with 16 points and eight boards while Christian Manaytay had 14. Errol Pastor piled up 10 points and 19 rebounds but missed all but four of his 16 attempts from the field.
