UNIVERSITY of Visayas won its fifth game in a row, subduing two-time reigning champions University of Cebu, 86-80, in the 12th Cebu Schools Athletic Foundation Inc. (Cesafi) men’s basketball tournament on Friday night at the Cebu Coliseum.
Eman Calo and Steve Cedric Akomo dealt the telling blows against the defending champions as they combined for 14 of the Green Lancers’ last 16 points.
Akomo’s two free throws broke the game’s final deadlock and put UV in front to stay, 82-80.
After Brian Heruela missed a three-pointer at the other end, guard John Abad drove down the lane and found Calo open in the corner for a dagger trey that sealed the win for the Green Lancers in the final 7.6 seconds.
The victory gave the Lancers a 5-0 (win-loss) slate, and more importantly the needed momentum heading to their blockbuster match-up with bitter rival Southwestern University on Sunday.
Calo finished with 21 points, three rebounds, two assists, four steals, and a rare four-point play in the fourth quarter just when the Webmasters were on the brink of pulling away from the Lancers.
Heruela led the Webmasters with 20 points, 10 rebounds, two assists, and five steals, and personally rallied the team from a 40-55 deficit in the third quarter.
His five straight points even gave the boys in blue and yellow a 72-69 lead, before Calo came through with that huge four-point play and put the Lancers back into the game.
Two free throws by Phil Mercader and another three-pointer by Calo had UV regaining the upperhand, 78-74. But Heruela carried UC on his shoulders, hitting two more free throws to tie the game for the last time at 80-all.
Vincent Mendoza added 17 for the Lancers while Jerome Silva chipped in 15, and Akomo 11 points, 11 rebounds, three assists and two steals.
UC fell to 2-3 overall.
