CEBU CITY — University of the Visayas erased a 16-point deficit to beat UAAP champion National University, 77-74, on Saturday in the 2014 Philippine Collegiate Champions League Elite Eight at the Cebu Coliseum.
Rhaffy Octobre made the equalizing free-throw, missed his second shot but the offensive rebound was hauled down by import Steve Akomo who scored on a putback to give the Lancers a 74-72 lead.
NU pushed the ball up quickly but Gelo Alolino had his lay-up attempt blocked by Akomo that led to an uncontested shot for Octobre on the other end for a 76-72 advantage with 16.4 seconds remaining.
The Bulldogs had a glimmer of hope after Alolino was fouled while shooting a triple but he made just two of the free throws to make it 74-76 with 9.1 ticks to go.
John Abad was sent to the charity stripe, making one of two shots for the final count.
Abad led all scorers with 18 points, while Franz Arong added 17 markers. They combined for 13 in the final frame to help UV overhaul a 53-57 deficit at the end of the third. Akomo chipped in 14. The win was the first for UV’s newly-installed head coach Gary Cortes after their defeat at the hands of La Salle on Friday.
Troy Rosario scored 16 to pace the Bulldogs, while Alolino had 14 and Alfred Aroga chipped in with 13.
Abad and Paolo Javelona were slapped technical fouls each for taunting. Alolino was also called for an unsportsmanlike foul for tripping Abad in one of many heated moments of the match.
